GreenLight Solutions at the Mesa Marathon: Five Years of Supporting Sustainability in Sports

The annual Mesa Marathon is a time for celebration of runners from all across Arizona, and GreenLight Solutions is celebrating its fifth year as a Sustainability Partner! The Green Team led the waste diversion efforts, creating a local win for sustainability. 

GreenLight Solutions donated 1,515 tons of clothing and towels to those in need, and diverted 2.79 tons of CO₂, which is equivalent to 7,200 miles driven and 225,000 cellphones charged. ​

Our Goal

On the right is United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #12: 
Responsible Consumption and Production. At our event, we create a new culture that invites people to see in real-time the importance of proper waste management and the amount of diversion that, with the power of visibility, pushes everyone to be more mindful of their actions when disposing of waste.

Waste Diversion Supports Everyone

According to Our World in Data, we emit over 350 billion tons of CO₂ every year, which is a number that needs to change. By promoting sustainability at such events, we are taking a step towards a balanced atmosphere.

Reducing waste, sorting waste properly, and much more aren’t small topics. By doing so, we are educating everyone who attends the marathon so they leave the event with more sustainable habits, as well as demonstrating Mesa’s commitment to sustainability. Recycled materials can also be transformed into new products, support local circular economies, and even contribute to feeding those in our community experiencing homelessness.​

Riya is a student at ASU majoring in computer science and interested in media design. She has experience in graphic design and editing, helping out with marketing for GLS, as well as software and data engineering.
