FOR Energy is a solar panel installation company that prioritizes sustainability and helping Arizona residents maximize the energy efficiency of their homes. After our initial discussion with FOR, it became apparent that they desired a shift in their social media strategy. More specifically, they felt that the absence of a consistent social media post aesthetic and post schedule hurt their online image.
The Fresh Food Collaboration Movement (FFC) is a collaborative effort between Green Living Magazine and Urban Farming Education. The movement seeks to alleviate food scarcity and food access issues caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. They do this by partnering with local farms and food providers to create boxes with fresh produce, fresh bread, and other organic treats to distribute to low income families in the Phoenix valley. Volunteers from around the city come together to help assemble the boxes for distribution.
Urban communities are facing many challenges when it comes to integrating sustainability with day to day living. Large cities mean more urban sprawl--which means more cars, longer travel times, and therefore higher emissions. [...]

Climate change poses significant challenges to the Phoenix Valley. Among these challenges are increased flooding, prolonged drought, groundwater depletion, loss of agriculture revenues, and temperature rise; yet extreme heat poses the greatest threat to Phoenix residents. The average nighttime temperature of central Phoenix is roughly 10-15°F hotter than in more rural areas. This phenomena is known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, where temperatures are heightened by a ‘built’ city environment. For many people, such as public transit riders, this heat is unavoidable.
As the global population increases, there’s been an up-and-coming challenge about the methods to create housing developments without severe economic, social, and environmental consequences. As a pioneer in the field of sustainable societies, Utopia Smart City is developing a sustainable community that provides affordable housing while being environmentally conscious. This team of GreenLight Solutioneers collaborated with the mixed-use, occupant-owned, self-sustaining community in order to find and source sustainable building materials for their infrastructure.

Our project will enable Stardust Building Supplies to enhance its economic pillar of sustainability by saving money recycling old appliances. As a nonprofit that collects and repurposes technology, Stardust receives many different used building materials, household items, and appliances from across the state. Of these appliances, some are sold and given a second life, and some are not. Those that remain still have inventory costs. This is the challenge that was presented to the GreenLight project team.

Our team worked with Solar United Neighbors this semester. They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focusing on increasing public awareness regarding solar energy. Their three main goals are establishing solar co-ops, increasing civic engagement with solar energy policies and increasing community engagement with solar. Currently, they are trying to increase their reach by expanding into new states. After originally starting in Washington D.C., they have branched out to 11 additional states with Arizona being their latest. Being so, they’ve chosen to work with GreenLight Solutions to help get more hands on deck to run marketing campaigns and their informational sessions. The project team spent the semester learning about solar technology, policy regarding solar and how Solar United Neighbors runs their co-op process.

The past semester we had the opportunity to work directly with Ryan Johnson who is a board member on the Arizona Green Chamber of Commerce. The goal of this project was to create a comprehensive database that compiled sustainable businesses all over Arizona. The efforts behind creating this is to encourage businesses to increase their efforts on sustainability initiatives, as well as having this information available for consumers to make wiser decisions on their shopping patterns. This is something which has already been seen in many cities around Arizona. They have certified businesses and ranked their efforts based on a point system they created.
The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess came to GreenLight with the challenge of how to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from employee transportation. The resort had attempted to do this by signing up for the Maricopa County SharetheRide app, but employee participation was low. In hopes of popularizing the app, we took this challenge as an opportunity to find a creative means to understand the needs of employees. Therefore, we created a survey to gauge why or why not employees would participate in the program. The results from the survey could be used for future marketing and incentive programs to increase employee ridesharing.
