Zero-Waste Workshop for Arizona Businesses and Facilities

According to the 2021 Circularity Gap Report (CGR)— 70% of greenhouse gases emitted are directly linked to material handling and use (from extraction and transportation to processing and consumption). While CGR reports global circularity at 8.6% as of 2021, they suggest that an increase to just 17% would keep global warming well within 2 degrees by the end of the century.

As an eager young professional sitting in my Sustainability and Enterprise course at ASU, my professor, Dr. George Basile, presented findings of the CGR report. I first learned about global plastic pollution and environmental degradation as a junior in high school, activating me to a life of stewardship. After 3 years into college and my pursuit to build a career in sustainability (where I often felt more fuddled about how to approach sustainability than anything else)— Professor Basile had handed me the key to a metaphorical lock presenting a clear path forward. After all my coursework in complexity and ecosystems, renewable energy, and environmental ethics— the research on circularity told me everything I needed to know. A circular economy will allow for a livable and thriving world. As an undergraduate within the College of Global Futures (CGF): the circular economy = sustainability.

Luckily, Dr. Basile did not limit his lecturing to reports and numbers— he spoke boldly about the power of action and initiative. His attitude and holistic approach to changemaking instilled in me a fierce confidence to take this newfound key and look to unlocking a circular economy within my own community. And I wasn’t alone on this venture. Over coffee in a Tempe cafe I met with my classmate, Timothy Whitney Jr. As the complementary Business and Sustainability hawk to my social science degree, I proposed to him my entrepreneurial concept seeking to bridge the circularity gap starting in our own community. And it was that day over coffee that we planted a seed that, in due time, would sprout and become our zero-waste consulting collaborative and think tank— Circular Earth.

Over the last two years, Timothy and I have used our zero-waste mission to cultivate meaningful partnerships and projects within the Phoenix metropolitan area. Through a shared vision of a livable and thriving world for generations to come— we joined forces with GreenLight Solutions to initiate circularity projects through the City of Mesa’s Youth Climate Action Grant. Of the four circularity projects we submitted, funded at $5,000 each, our Zero-Waste Workshop for Arizona Businesses and Facilities stood out among the three other projects funded by the grant. Instead of partnering with one single business on a project to design and implement custom zero-waste improvements for their facility, the zero-waste workshop aimed to reach a wave of businesses in one swift effort. By convening sustainability stakeholders, community partners, and business leaders over a half-day workshop —organized with a panel of zero-waste experts, an introductory presentation, and collaborative breakout sessions— this project aimed to spread our zero-waste ethos broadly across the community.

With over six months in planning and outreach (largely supported by GreenLight Solutions staff and volunteers), we hosted our workshop on October 13th at Benedictine University in downtown Mesa. Opening remarks were given by AZ State Senator Lauren Kuby, career long sustainability advocate. The workshop additionally gathered support from one of Mesa’s Councilwomen, who attended the event and later told me at the post-event happy hour that she sees circularity as an important pillar, building economic resiliency and self-sufficiency in Mesa. The political support was an added bonus as our workshop saw 35 attendees across the private sector, representing 16 businesses and organizations across Arizona. As the workshop came to an end and attendees proudly developed their own individual zero-waste goals— the event was an overwhelming success.

This was my first try at content and program design of a circularity type workshop, as well as actually hosting and facilitating the event day-of. The months of preparation (especially the countless hours and anxiety that built in the final days before the event) led up to the hour before start time, as the room filled with community partners —many of which I now call friends— and attendees. The room suddenly filled with a buzz of warm energy that quickly soothed my nerves, and I felt myself relax as all the pieces came together in real time. My research and passion in circular economies drove me into this project headfirst, but it wasn’t until hosting my own event and observing the community deeply resonate with our mission of moving towards zero-waste, that I was able to verify our efforts as valuable and desired by the broader community (in other words, we were onto something). As we wrapped up the event and attendees largely shared with the room how the program left them feeling inspired, connected, and hopeful— I was on cloud nine.

No different than any other project Timothy and I initiated as Circular Earth, this event was built entirely out of collaboration with our mentors and partners. From being trained as Zero-Waste Advisors through the U.S. Green Building Council’s Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) Certification to mentorship and project management by Ashley Weisman at GreenLight Solutions— community and strategic partnerships started this project and led to its success. The momentum from this event carries forward as four zero-waste audits were actioned to businesses who attended the event to dive deeper into making zero-waste a reality for their facility. Timothy and I plan to strengthen the consulting capacity of Circular Earth conducting these four audits over the next 6-7 months with Olla Olla Crepes, Stardust Building Supplies, Concordia Charter School, and Children’s Museum of Phoenix. The audits will work with each facility to generate a baseline waste assessment and identify opportunities for each facility to cut costs by maximizing waste diversion.

Kyleigh Brown is a Legislative Assistant with the Arizona State Senate and a passionate advocate for sustainability and economic justice. She co-founded Circular Earth - One Step Consulting and serves on the Policy Committee for Circular Arizona, while also partnering with BeanChain. An alumna of the College of Global Futures and the School of Politics and Global Studies, Kyleigh combines her policy expertise with a love for coffee and community engagement.

Water Recycling and Good Vibrations at St. Vincent de Paul

When Kyleigh Brown and I started Circular Earth to be sustainability partners for small businesses, we had no idea where it might lead. We had bright eyes and hope—that was about it. Nearly two years later, that four-letter word manifested into another impact-project success: waste turned into growth, young people creating lasting change, and the pure joy of the process.

Circular Earth partnered with the Mesa Youth Climate Action Fund, GreenLight Solutions, and St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) to turn this vision into reality. SVdP Mesa Dining Hall and Urban Farm feeds folks experiencing homelessness every day of the year. The Farm provides the freshest and most nutritious fruits and vegetables to the Dining Hall.

There are as many services here as smiling faces—career resources, clothing, prayer, and a space to cool down in the summer heat. Services even include a shower trailer with towels and soap.This is where we come in.

Instead of running into the sewer, water from roughly 100 showers a week provided for homeless patrons is filtered and reused to irrigate a small oasis. Our grey-water system turns shower runoff into apricot blossoms and pumpkin vine leaves bigger than your head. Each year, the system will divert about 83,000 gallons of water, saving roughly $662—enough to help provide 133 meals for SVdP’s homeless clientele. Built to run for six years with minimal maintenance, the filter system isn’t a temporary solution; it’s a quiet, durable commitment to using resources wisely so more can be spent on people.

Additionally, behind the showers in a once-neglected corner, we built a Green Space zen-style garden. Features include a reclaimed-wood pergola, lily planters as bookends, a solar-powered Buddha water feature, and a 100% recycled-plastic bench that will last a lifetime. It’s a place where guests can sit, breathe, and soak in the peace of nature.

SVdP Mesa Dining Hall and Urban Farm have a way of making stories like these happen. It’s blooming with flowers, exotic plants, good vibrations, and even hosts a river-stone shrine of St. Francis of Assisi. Ka-Linda will send you home with fresh goodies—figs, cucumbers, chard, peppers—if you get lucky. Insider tip: volunteering is the best way to enjoy the urban farm. We couldn’t have executed this project without the whole team. Brewing a Sustainable Future in Mesa

Nestled in the historic downtown of Mesa, Jarrod’s Coffee Shop is nothing short of magical. In the heat of summer, the coffeehouse was starting to struggle with poor ventilation, holes in the roof, and an AC system that couldn’t keep up. That’s where GreenLight Solutions stepped in. Through the Mesa Youth Climate Fund’s first round of microgrants, we conducted a full energy audit to pinpoint exactly what Jarrod’s could do to improve efficiency. The findings were clear: a lot of work needed to be done. And with the second round of funding, we began to plan solutions to address our original findings.

Our goal was simple, as we wanted to make the shop more sustainable while also reducing long-term utility costs for the business.

Here’s what we accomplished together:

Added four new vents and closed holes in the roof to improve air circulation and make cooling more effective. Installed a new ice machine, saving Jarrod daily trips to Costco and reducing gas usage and carbon emissions.
Introduced a food recycler to turn coffee grounds and food scraps into nutrient-rich soil.
Launched a BYOC program.
Purchased reusable mugs and glasses to reduce plastic waste.
Conducted a water audit and, with additional funding from our project with St. Vincent de Paul, implemented improvements that now save the shop 35,000 gallons of water annually.

The results speak for themselves: Jarrod’s is now not only more comfortable and functional for its patrons, but it’s also greener, more efficient, and more cost-effective to operate. From energy upgrades to new sustainable business practices, this historic coffee shop is now living proof that sustainability and small business success can go hand in hand.

She has supported local businesses and institutions in implementing composting, water-saving, and energy efficiency measures that improve operations while minimizing environmental impact. Her work bridges research, policy, and everyday practice, aiming to make sustainability approachable and effective.

GreenLight Solutions at Oktoberfest: How Waste Diversion is Shaping the Future of Festivals

Oktoberfest is one of the world’s most iconic cultural celebrations. Originating in Germany and now celebrated globally, it draws huge crowds with live music, contests, food, and a full carnival atmosphere. But with large gatherings comes an often-overlooked consequence: massive amounts of waste.

Raising the Bar for Festival Sustainability at City of Tempe’s annual Oktoberfest, GreenLight Solutions once again took the lead in reducing event waste—and the results were extraordinary.

In 2025, our Green Team achieved a 52% waste diversion rate, a major leap from last year’s 37%. Over just three years, we’ve gone from 32% → 37% → 52%, marking the highest diversion rate in Oktoberfest history. The impact didn’t stop there.

Waste Diversion Stats: #Starving the Landfill

2023: 3.7 tons
2024: 4 tons
2025: 7.1 tons

This year’s performance represents a 78% increase in diverted waste from 2024, showcasing the power of teamwork, community partnership, and intentional sustainability planning.

Connecting Waste Diversion to Global Sustainability Goals
All Green Team operations are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDG #12: Responsible Consumption and Production. By helping major events rethink waste, we are fostering a culture of sustainability that reduces environmental impact and supports circular systems.

Despite intense weather—including microbursts and heavy rain—our team powered through. In total, we diverted nearly 21 tons of CO₂, the equivalent of:

54,000 miles driven
1.7M smartphones charged

Weathering the Microburst: Volunteer Voices from the Storm
Volunteer Matthew DePasquale described the experience as witnessing a, “30-yard long dumpster filled to the brim with recyclable materials”—all saved from the landfill and ready to be repurposed. He also noted that the team went back during the final two days--even in the rain—to ensure nothing recyclable was left behind.

This year’s efforts were especially impressive given that during the festival, Tempe was hit by a severe microburst in which straight-line winds of 80–90 mph tore through neighborhoods, prompting Mayor Corey Woods to declare a city-wide state of emergency. The storm left an estimated 500 trees lost within the city’s park system alone and required extensive cleanup and community coordination.

That level of dedication from the GreenLight Solutions team—delivering a major waste-diversion win even amidst a recovery period—truly embodies the spirit of our organization.

How Waste Diversion Supports Local Businesses
Reducing event waste isn’t only an environmental win—it also benefits local businesses and communities. Recycled materials can be transformed into new products, support local circular economies, and even contribute to feeding those in our community experiencing homelessness.

The success of this year’s diversion efforts shows what’s possible when sustainability becomes part of event culture. Oktoberfest is now setting the standard for eco-friendly festivals in Arizona, and we’re excited to build on this momentum for years to come.

GreenLight Solutions at the Best of Arizona Gala: Celebrating Sustainability Through Action

GreenLight Solutions proudly supported this year’s Best of Arizona Gala, helping manage composting, recycling, and all sustainability efforts. And once again—GreenLight Solutions delivered. Just like last year, the event achieved an impressive 90% waste diversion rate, officially qualifying it as a zero-waste event.

Sustainability Impact You Can MeasureHosted by Green Living Magazine, the gala celebrated Arizona’s most inspiring environmental changemakers. Guests enjoyed incredible food; powerful performances from a poet, choir, and comedian; and engaging tabling from local organizations. The atmosphere was vibrant, community-driven, and filled with purpose—and the sustainability impact matched the energy.

Thanks to coordinated waste-diversion efforts, the event successfully prevented significant emissions. The CO₂ impact alone equated to:

580 miles driven
17,300 smartphones charged

These numbers reflect just how intentional and meaningful sustainability can be at a single gathering.

GreenLight Solutions proudly supported the third annual Going Green Summit, hosted by the Compass CBS Foundation, achieving an impressive 79% waste diversion rate. This year’s summit brought together founders, leaders, and community members who are passionate about sustainability—and ready to take meaningful action.

Panel Discussion: Inspiring Everyday Sustainability
GreenLight Solutions’ CEO, Ashley Weisman, shared practical ways individuals can integrate sustainability into daily life. One example she highlighted was the power of shopping local, which not only supports the community but also reduces transportation emissions and resource use. Ashley emphasized that small, consistent choices—when made collectively—create a measurable environmental impact.

Another summit speaker, Bill Kingman, of Mill, discussed the importance of rethinking the food we often throw away. He reminded attendees that every piece of food represents soil, water, energy, and labor. Instead of letting excess food end up in the landfill, he encouraged repurposing it to support neighbors, reduce waste, and honor the resources invested in its production. Bill also highlighted innovative tools like Mill, a food-recycling system that turns kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich feed—showing how new technologies can help families and businesses reduce waste at the source. Innovation at the Heart of SustainabilityLong-time GreenLight Solutions volunteer Matthew DePasquale shared that if he could describe GLS in one word, it would be “Innovative.” As technology evolves, so do the opportunities to reduce waste, repurpose materials, and design smarter systems. Bill reinforced this theme by showcasing new tools and technologies that help minimize food waste and transform scraps into valuable resources.

The Going Green Summit underscored a powerful truth: sustainability thrives when people are willing to learn, share ideas, and embrace innovation. Investing in new technologies—and maintaining open, forward-thinking mindsets—helps communities grow stronger and more resilient.

Green Living Magazine and GreenLight Solutions Green Team is thrilled to celebrate another sustainability milestone— achieving 78% waste diversion at The Future of Sustainability 2025. This accomplishment is a testament to what’s possible when collaboration, passion, and purpose come together.

Keeping Waste Out of Landfills: Our Four Pillars

Our waste diversion success was powered by a combination of hands-on, intentional strategies, brought to life
by an incredible community of volunteers and partners. Key initiatives included:

By focusing on these four efforts, the Green Team significantly reduced the amount of waste that ended up in

Pat’s Run: Driving Sustainability and Community Impact

Pat’s Run isn’t just about honoring a legacy — it’s also a platform for creating positive environmental and social change. This year, our sustainability and community efforts were stronger than ever, thanks to our dedicated Green Team and generous volunteers.

Greening the Event

Sustainability was front and center at Pat’s Run. Through strategic planning and hands-on efforts, we made major strides in waste diversion. In total, we diverted 13.4 tons of material from the landfill —

achieving a 81% diversion rate. These results reflect the commitment of the Pat Tillman Foundation to reducing environmental impact and setting a standard for sustainable events.

Supporting the Community

Our rescued food supported local food banks and shelters, providing nourishment to individuals and families facing food insecurity. The ripple effect of these efforts is felt long after race day.

M3F: Starving the Landfill and Education for a Greener Future

March 7th-8th, 2025, marked another successful year for M3F, not only as a premier music and arts festival but also as a leader in sustainable event practices. With a commitment to environmental responsibility, M3F's sustainability efforts focused on waste diversion and environmental education, making a significant impact on the festival's sustainability efforts.

By the Numbers: A Community Effort

18,000 Event Attendees enjoyed the festival, experiencing both incredible music and an eco-conscious event environment.
193 Volunteers and Staff worked tirelessly to maximize the recycling and composting efforts.
$25,955 Value of Volunteer Hours contributed to making M3F a green festival.
HDR Corporate Volunteers played a key role in supporting sustainability efforts on-site.

Waste Diversion Success: 56% Kept Out of Landfills

Beyond waste diversion, M3F emphasized environmental education and raising awareness for sustainability, ensuring attendees understood the importance of responsible waste disposal and sustainable practices.

Mesa Marathon 2025: Making an Impact Through Sustainability and Community Support

The Mesa Marathon is more than just a race — it’s a powerful force for good. This annual event brings together 10,000 runners, volunteers, and community partners, all contributing to a shared mission of sustainability and service. Through dedicated efforts, the marathon has significantly reduced waste, supported local organizations, and demonstrated the impact of collective action.

Greening the Race

Sustainability is at the core of the Mesa Marathon. Thanks to the commitment of our Green Team and Brooksee, the event implemented a robust waste management system. This year, through effective recycling and composting, we diverted 4.3 tons of waste from the landfill! The GreenLight Solutions Green Team has collaborated with the marathon for the past four years, and we continue to increase our impact year after year!

Compostable Waste: Food scraps and compostable materials were collected by R.City and sent to local composting facilities.
Recyclables: Plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard were sorted by the Green Team and recycled by City of Mesa Solid Waste Department.
Waste Reduction: Participants were encouraged to use reusable water bottles and participate in cup-free hydration stations.

We’re proud to partner with organizations such as the City of Mesa Solid Waste Department and Waste Not to ensure our waste management efforts make a lasting difference.

Supporting Our Community

Beyond sustainability, the Mesa Marathon continues to uplift the community through partnerships and donations. Our collaboration with organizations such as St. Vincent de Paul, R.City, and Paz de Cristo helps provide essential resources to those in need.

Food Rescue: Surplus food from the event was donated to local shelters and food banks through St. Vincent de Paul and Paz de Cristo.
Volunteer Support: A dozen volunteers gave their time and energy to ensure that every piece of recyclable and compostable material was sorted in their correct waste streams, guaranteeing their diversion.

Fall 2024: A Season of Impact and Growth

To finish off 2024, GreenLight Solutions hosted another GreenLight Bootcamp experience where youth participants went beyond the classroom to gain hands-on experience in sustainability project management. Over the course of an intensive seven weeks and fourteen workshops, these Solutioneers partnered with three organizations to address real world sustainability challenges and meet their project partners’ goals.

One youth Solutioneer reflected, “It was great to be able to once again be in the sustainability space as a non-student, especially with these resources and support,”' capturing the program’s ability to empower participants regardless of their academic status."

Guided by GreenLight’s structured project cycle and supported by dedicated Solutioneer Mentors and Project Partners alike, participants developed creative solutions and delivered impactful results—all within a condensed timeline of just seven weeks and fourteen workshops! It was no small feat, and their achievements are something to be celebrated.

Mobilizing Change with Third Act
The first project team partnered with Third Act, an organization committed to mobilizing Americans over 60 to take meaningful climate action. The team’s challenge was to engage this demographic in a way that inspired participation and fostered community outreach. Through thoughtful research and creative problem-solving, the team developed and distributed 20 visually engaging posters and proposed 10 specific and actionable strategies to promote civic engagement in climate action and democracy locally.
By tailoring event ideas to align with Third Act’s values, they created a roadmap for impactful community mobilization. Along the way, the students gained valuable experience in outreach, communication, and innovative problem-solving, making a lasting impact on the organization and their own skill sets.

Composting Connections with Mill
The next team collaborated with Mill, creating a partnership dedicated to advancing sustainable composting practices. Their project mission: raise awareness about the program and secure new subscriptions for the food recycling service. Their ethos: food for the land, not the landfill.

The team adopted a few different approaches, including digital marketing and in-person engagement. They connected with community members at a local farmers’ market and reached out to green businesses through targeted email campaigns. Their efforts laid the groundwork for securing 6+ new subscriptions, a testament to their strategic thinking and dedication. This project emphasized the importance of clear communication and adaptability when working towards sustainability goals.

Building Momentum with WormLab Community Initiative

As one of two WormLab teams, this community initiative focused on promoting its pilot program and building strategic partnerships. This project presented an exciting opportunity to help WormLab effectively communicate its vision for revolutionizing composting systems.

The team crafted 1 infographic illustrating the WormLab process, 1 digital pitch deck showcasing the program’s benefits, and 1 feedback survey for continuous improvement. They also developed 1 prospect list of potential partners, equipping WormLab with the tools to expand its reach. By diving deep into the organization’s mission and translating it into compelling materials, the students enhanced their skills in stakeholder engagement and effective storytelling.

Innovating for Municipal Partnerships with WormLab Inground Innovators
The WormLab Inground Innovators team took on a project to help WormLab foster partnerships with municipalities for advancing closed-loop composting systems. Their challenge was to clearly convey WormLab’s value to municipal stakeholders.
Through research and first-hand experience with a food recycler, the team created 1 detailed pitch deck and 1 engaging video to demonstrate how the program aligns with municipal sustainability goals. This polished presentation will serve as a key tool in WormLab’s efforts to build meaningful partnerships. The project underscored the importance of aligning values, refining messaging, and effectively presenting ideas to diverse audiences.

Throughout this Bootcamp, students experienced the full arc of GreenLight’s project cycle—from initial research and strategy development to delivering tangible solutions. Each team tackled unique challenges, collaborated effectively, and delivered meaningful results for their Project Partners. Whether they were creating outreach strategies, developing marketing tools, or aligning organizational goals with sustainability values, these students showcased creativity, perseverance, and dedication. This experience also demonstrated the power of networking and collaboration, as one Solutioneer was invited to join a youth panel at a Third Act event featuring renowned figures Bill McKibben and Rebecca Solnit during their Silver Wave Tour.
This Bootcamp wasn’t just about sustainability—it was about growth, learning, and making real-world impact. The students have much to be proud of, and their work is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation. Here’s to another successful season of GreenLight Bootcamp projects, and to the bright futures of these talented participants and impactful organizations!

As a sustainability volunteer with GreenLight Solutions, I recently had the opportunity to help with a very special mission: Maximize waste diversion at VIVA Phoenix! Our Green Team was ready to achieve this mission through recycling, composting, and raising awareness.

When I arrived at VIVA Phoenix, we strategically set up recycling, composting, and trash stations throughout the venue, making it as easy as possible for attendees to make sustainable choices. As volunteers, we stationed ourselves near high-traffic areas, ready to educate attendees about proper recycling and composting habits and answer questions. In the zero waste world, this is called Bin Guarding!

As the music played, we alternated between shifts of Waste Sorting and Bin Guarding. Volunteering at a music festival brought together two things I love—live music and environmental action. By picking up litter and raising awareness, I felt like we were creating a cleaner, greener space for everyone to enjoy. However, it wasn’t all hard work; there were plenty of perks to being a Green Team member:

Direct Environmental Impact: By sorting waste, we diverted 1.1 tons of trash from the landfill, including 1323 lbs to recycling and 891 lbs to composting. This is equivalent to 3 metric tons of CO₂ being prevented from entering the atmosphere! It’s powerful to know that our work has an immediate and measurable environmental benefit.
Sense of Accomplishment: Every piece of waste sorted felt like a victory. Each time someone chose to compost instead of throw something away, we knew we were making a direct, tangible impact. The full compost and recycling bins demonstrated our collective impact!
Front Row to Education: This kind of volunteer work builds a unique bond between the community and the environment, showing people that small actions can add up to significant positive change.

4. Personal Growth and New Skills: Being part of the Green Team pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me a lot about communicating with people from all walks of life. I learned to speak confidently about waste reduction and sustainability, which is something I’ll carry into future experiences.

5. A Lasting Cultural Shift: Festivals like VIVA Phoenix bring thousands of people together. When they see volunteers making a positive environmental impact, it leaves a lasting impression. Many people told us they were inspired to start recycling or composting more because of what they learned from us.

As the festival wrapped up, our Green Team gathered to celebrate our successes. We’d made a visible difference, and the festival grounds were noticeably cleaner. Knowing we’d helped divert waste and educate the public made every moment worth it. We left VIVA Phoenix feeling empowered, knowing our efforts contributed to a cleaner, greener festival experience and a more informed community. The Green Team delivered and the Valley of the Sun reaped the benefits.

Teeing Up for Sustainability Success

One of the most important factors in sustainable event planning is continuous improvement, and this can only be achieved through event planners prioritizing sustainability as a core priority of the event, rather than an afterthought. Leslie’s Pool Supplies reached out to the Green Team in 2023 to request our Green Event Services for its Annual Charity Golf Tournament, demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainability.
2023 marked the Green Team’s first collaboration with Leslie’s 34th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, achieving 40% diversion from the landfill. This was done with only three Green Team members!

Since then, the Green Team has executed another 23 events in 2024, honings the team’s collective skills and expertise. For the 2024 golf tournament, the Green Team had twelve Green Team staff and volunteers to support on the ground efforts and achieved 57% waste diversion.

The Green Team executed multiple strategies to maximize waste diversion from the landfill:

Organized waste haulers for recycling, composting, food donations, and landfill services
Ordered the waste bins, signage, supplies, and materials needed for the team
Strategically placed 17 tri-bin waste stations across the golf course
Created an hour-by-hour plan across the fifteen hours our team was on site
Ordered sustainable sourcing alternatives for all dishware used throughout the tournament
Staff Waste Sorted in the back of house to make sure that every material had the opportunity to be reused, recycled, or composted

Volunteers Bin Guarded to raise awareness amongst event attendees
Donated excess food to those in need
Our Executive Director, Ashley, presented about our Sustainability Initiatives during the breakfast program
Provided a Sustainability Guide and collaborated closely with the kitchen crew, bartenders, and golf course staff
Composted all paper towels from the various bathrooms
Calculated the post-event impact metrics to report carbon emissions savings
And more!

Our impact

We achieved a 57% diversion rate, which is significantly higher than last year! This means that 372 pounds were diverted from the landfill, which equates to around a half-ton of Carbon emissions avoided. This is equivalent to the amount of CO2 emitted from charging 35,000 smartphones or driving 1,373 miles in a standard vehicle. This is an impressive impact for an event that lasted only a few hours!
Additionally, we were able to partner with Knead Phoenix to help us donate 82 pounds of food. They network with local food donors, volunteers, and recipients to promote food access while reducing food waste.

Compass CBS Achieving an 80% Waste Diversion Rate: GreenLight Solutions at the Going Green and Going Smart Summit

On October 9th, 2024, the Going Green and Going Smart Summit was the place to be if you were an environmental leader, community member, or an industry innovator who wanted to unite in a shared commitment to a greener future. But the summit wasn’t just about ideas; it was a day of action, achieving an impressive 80.26% waste diversion rate thanks to the hands-on efforts of GreenLight Solutions, and support from Compass CBS Foundation, Mill, Waste Management, R.City, and City of Tempe, the summit became a model of what’s possible when a community commits to going green.

A Hands-On Approach
At the heart of GreenLight Solutions’ impact at the summit were the “boots on the ground”—our team of staff worked to make waste diversion more than just a goal. Each staff stationed themselves near trash bins throughout the venue, helping attendees navigate the world of recycling and composting. With an educational approach, they explained which items of trash belonged in each bin. This both contributed to the achieved waste diversion rate and inspired attendees to take sustainable habits home with them. However, mistakes still occur. Volunteers also took on the crucial task of Top Sorting, or moving items thrown in the wrong bin into the proper one. Then behind the scenes, GreenLight Solutions staff took on the responsibility of completing the full Waste Sort, meaning that they went through every bin from top to bottom to ensure that every item that could be recycled or composted, did!

Partnering for Success
While GreenLight Solutions led the charge, achieving an 80% waste diversion rate was a collaborative effort that wouldn’t have been possible without supporters. Mill and Waste Management believes in GreenLight Solution’s mission and is dedicated to propelling them forward. With R.City’s expertise in composting, all organic waste collected at the summit was turned into valuable, nutrient-dense compost, reducing landfill use and supporting sustainable agricultural practices in the Phoenix area. The City of Tempe contributed essential recycling and landfill services. Then last, but not least, GreenLight Solutions wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make this impact if it wasn’t for the organization behind the event: Compass CBS Foundation. Thank you to everyone who supported the Green Team and helped to make this impact possible.
These partnerships went beyond valuable resources—they reflected a shared commitment to sustainability and held a high standard for collaboration in environmental initiatives. Together, they proved that building a sustainable future requires networks of support and expertise beyond individual action.

Best of Arizona Awards Brings The Best Zero Waste

Green Event Services at GreenLight Solutions has one main goal: #StarvetheLandfill.

For an event to be considered “zero waste,” a 90% average diversion rate is typically required. It is safe to say that our mission was accomplished! We proudly report that the Green Team achieved 90% waste diversion from the landfill. But how did the Green Team make this happen?

Many different things are required to maximize waste diversion potential. GreenLight Solutions works hard to strategize how to make events as low waste as possible, but new heights can be reached when the event hosts truly care about sustainability.

Green Living Magazine was dedicated to making their Best of Arizona Awards Party event sustainable. They had multiple pre-event calls and site visits with the Green Team to ensure that the most efficient Waste Diversion protocol was in place. Green Living Magazine also committed to Sustainable Sourcing by choosing porcelain, reusable dishware, and recyclable wine glasses. Whatever couldn’t be reused or recycled was compostable.

“From planning waste diversion logistics to the sourcing of sustainable materials, sustainability was at the forefront of Green Living Magazine’s event planning, and not an afterthought.”

Tempe Oktoberfest 2024: How Cross-Sectoral Collaboration is Crucial for Community Impact

It was scorching out in the middle of October. Maybe I have a bias because I am from Washington, but it should not be over 100 degrees in October! However, the heat reminded us of why we came out to volunteer in the first place. Arizona was already hot, but it is just going to get hotter as conditions worsen due to climate change. Climate change and other environmental issues are complex problems. These are problems stretched across our global system, with multiple stakeholders and interconnected causes, effects, and solutions.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals state that everyone is needed to solve these global challenges to ensure that current and future generations have the opportunity for high quality of life. No person or company will solve the climate crisis (or any other complex issue) alone.

When I started my internship with GreenLight Solutions, I simultaneously began working with the Next Generation Service Corps (NGSC) at Arizona State University. NGSC’s goal is to teach students how to solves complex issues through cross-sectoral collaboration. This year I am the lead of Mission Team 22: Environmental Sustainability. Mission teams are groups of students in NGSC who have a passion for a particular social mission, and then work on projects to make a positive impact by learning, networking, volunteering, and planning impactful events. One of my goals for our mission team was to connect with as many environmentalists as possible in the Tempe area; so my internship with GreenLight Solutions was the perfect opportunity! The Green Team was recruiting volunteers, and my mission team was looking for opportunities to get involved with sustainability initiatives; so this was a perfect match to partner the two organizations. I brought members from my NGSC mission team to volunteer with me during the 3 days of Oktoberfest. I didn’t realize it then, but this was the perfect example of how cross-sectoral collaboration can be implemented at a large-scale event that targets environmental sustainability.

Four Peaks Oktoberfest is a collaboration between Tempe Sister Cities and Four Peaks Brewing. These two groups partnered with dozens of vendors and organizations and came together to create a memorable event for the community. For the past two years, Tempe Sister Cities also partnered with GreenLight Solutions to showcase its Commitment to Sustainability.

GreenLight Solutions brought its whole network of passionate collaborators to maximize waste diversion from the landfill. This partnership means that the maximum amount of fun doesn’t need to come at the expense of the environment. The Green Team consisted of 38 volunteers and 51 staff members responsible for the on-site Waste Sorting, Attendee Education, and Custodial Services. The Green Team met people where they were, whether they just wanted a weekend job, needed volunteer hours, or were already passionate about sustainability. The Green Team is made possible through collaborations with Mill, Waste Management, Phoenix Toolbank Equipment, R.City, City of Tempe, and ROTC.

The Green Team rescued these valuable resources:

Composting: R.City composted all food, paper, and compostable materials to create nutrient-rich soil for local farmers across Arizona.
Recycling: City of Tempe recycled all glass, cardboard, metal, and hard plastic.
Repurposing: Instead of sending pallets to the landfill, the City of Tempe repurposed them to be used for local firefighter training.

Overall, the Green Team recycled 6,800 pounds and composted 1,030 pounds. This is equivalent to 11 tons of CO2 emissions avoided, which is around 29,000 miles driven and 735,000 smartphones charged! In three days alone, GreenLight Solutions created a space where cross-sectoral collaborations solved complex challenges and made a direct impact. Thank you to all of those who made this possible.

Championing Residential Composting in Local Communities

At GreenLight Solutions, we are committed to fostering environmental stewardship through innovative educational programs. Our Greenlight Bootcamp is one such initiative that empowers students to tackle real-world sustainability challenges. This Summer, two dynamic teams, Project Team MAMYY and Project Team Sams, embarked on inspiring projects to promote residential composting in South Scottsdale. Here’s a closer look at their journey, strategies, and impactful outcomes.

Project Team MAMYY: Boosting Residential Composting

Challenges:
Project Team MAMYY faced the pressing issue of low composting participation and excessive food waste in South Scottsdale.

Solution:
Their goal was to acquire 15 new customers for residential composting services by a set deadline.

Strategies:
To achieve their target, the team implemented a multi-faceted approach:

Distributed flyers at key locations, including SDFC, Global Launch, Starbucks, CRTVEC, and Fujiya Market.
Set up an informational booth at Fujiya Market to engage directly with customers.
Sent email communications to 13 companies to expand their outreach.

Benefits:
The project partner, R.City, benefited by increasing awareness of its activities, promoting composting, and gaining new customers. All the while, the students encountered new ideas and perspectives, aligning their abilities with their goals, and bridging gaps in their approach. They gained practical experience in project management, community engagement, and received constructive feedback.

Not to mention that the local community benefited from reduced food waste, lower carbon dioxide emissions, and increased access to nutrient-rich, organic food.

Project Team Sams: Spreading the Word on Composting

Challenges:
Project Team Sams also addressed the issue of low composting participation in South Scottsdale.

Solutions:
They focused on sharing information about R.City and the benefits of composting to reach their goal of 15 new customers.

Strategies:
The team utilized a blend of digital and direct communication methods:

Posted 4 flyers on social media to increase online visibility.
Emailed 55 professors to tap into academic networks.
Delivered a presentation to spread awareness and encourage participation.

Benefits:
In terms of benefits, R.City experienced an increase in subscriptions, thereby expanding their reach and impact within the community. The students gained valuable knowledge about reducing food waste and CO2 emissions while honing their advertising skills. All the while, the community saw a reduction in food waste and a promotion of a circular economy, gaining access to compost and fresh products, fostering a more sustainable local environment.

The Greenlight Bootcamp has once again been a catalyst for positive change. Both Project Team MAMYY and Project Team Sams have demonstrated the power of strategic planning, community engagement, and innovative thinking. By addressing the critical issue of food waste and promoting composting, these students have not only supported their project partner, R.City, but have also contributed to a more sustainable future for South Scottsdale. We are immensely proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing the lasting impact of their work.

Living For a New Age

As a student attending the Living For a New Age event in April, I had no idea how beneficial this event was going to be.

A little back story on what this event was, Living For a New Age is a meeting where multiple companies, eco-leaders, environmentalists, and changemakers come together to discuss their business ideas, what they’re implementing, and changing to complete one common goal, making our world a greener and cleaner place to live.

Attending this event as a GreenLight Solutions event service assistant, I had one thing in mind: to do my job. GreenLight Solutions has cultivated a dynamic corps of volunteers, aptly named the F.U.N. community, dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of public events. Their efforts encompass meticulous trash collection, segregation, and recycling initiatives, guaranteeing events to be near zero waste footprint. This proactive approach by GreenLight Solutions and the F.U.N. community contributes significantly to reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices in event planning and execution. This holistic approach not only preserves cleanliness but also underscores the vital role of environmental stewardship in event management.

As a part of this event service, I realized how interesting this event actually was because every business had sustainability in their minds leading me to get carried away by their panel.

Imagine this: big, impactful companies and industry leaders are giving a panel on greener urban areas with architecture, water, electricity, and living strategies that they're implementing in their projects. This starts to get interesting to someone who is here to simply sort trash. Not only were there urban planners, but technology companies with goals to make charging stations accessible and collect data to analyze and encourage different behaviors for a net zero future. The panel was very enlightening, not only because every company was focusing on change but hearing these companies working on certain projects to make the world greener while also making a business out of it made this panel very interesting for me.

From the occasional "that goes in the trash", to sorting the bins, I found myself networking with many people at the event by accident. Meeting representatives from various companies with unique goals and aspirations to people like me, a student with a general curiosity about sustainability. This volunteering opportunity quickly became a networking heaven.

At the end of the event, we gathered the landfill, recyclable, and compostable materials with gloves and trash-picking sticks. Thanks to our efforts, there was an 86% Diversion Rate through composting and recycling. This impact is equivalent to charging 3,800 smartphones or driving 147 miles.

Once the event concluded, I couldn't help but reflect on the powerful energy that filled my mind. Living For a New Age wasn't just a conference, it was changing the world. Seeing businesses, nonprofits, and passionate individuals networking with different companies, and discussing plans for a greater cause. This event was well-rounded making it super beneficial.

The journey towards a sustainable future is ongoing, whether you are a CEO, employee, or volunteer sorting through trash at a local nonprofit , or simply as someone who cares a lot about the planet, remember that every action counts. Let's keep making an impact, pushing our boundaries, and inspiring change to make our goal for a greener future successful in every sector.

Knocking Waste Out of the Park

Picture this: The morning is a tranquil oasis, yet
brimming with the quiet anticipation of bustling activity
about to unfold. During this year's spring training
games, something remarkable happened at Tempe
Diablo Stadium. Among the cheers and excitement of
the crowd, a dedicated team of GreenLight Solutions
volunteers called the Green Team was hard at work
throughout 16 separate games. Not on the field, but in
the stands, and outside the stadium tackling the
challenge of waste management with passion and
purpose.

The sun is shining, fans fill the stands, and the anticipation of another thrilling game hangs in the air. But amidst the buzz of excitement, there's a silent army of volunteers clad in neon green, armed with gloves and recycling bins, ready to make a difference. For fans getting their snacks, beverages, and enjoying the games, properly disposing of waste throwing the wrappers may not seem like a lot. Still, due to the massive scale and misunderstanding of waste management, this is where the magic begins.

The Green Team Initiative is more than just a
volunteer program—it's a movement dedicated to
minimizing waste and promoting sustainability in our
communities. And at Tempe Diablo Stadium, it's in full
swing. With a goal to divert the stadium's waste, these
volunteers are on a mission to turn trash into treasure.
From the first pitch to the final inning, the Green Team
volunteers are on the front lines, engaging with fans
and educating them on the importance of recycling,
composting, and reducing waste. Armed with
knowledge and enthusiasm, they intercept trash
destined for the landfill, sorting it into bins for
recycling, composting, and even food reuse. Every
bottle, every wrapper, every leftover hot dog
bun—they all find a new purpose, thanks to the
dedication of the Green Team.

With our volunteers combining a total of 357
hours, what does all this hard work amount to? The
numbers don't lie: 15 tons of waste diverted through
recycling, composting, food reuse, upcycling of scrap
metal and e-waste, and diversion of grease.

That's 15 tons of potential landfill space saved, 333 meals provided to those in need, and a staggering 43 tons of CO2 emissions avoided. It's more than just trash—it's a tangible impact on our environment and our community.

As the sun sets on another day at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the legacy of the GreenLight Solutions Initiative lives
on. Through their passion, dedication, and tireless effort, these volunteers have proven that when it comes to
sustainability, every small action counts. So here's to the Green Team volunteers, the unsung heroes of the
ballpark, who remind us that with a little teamwork and a lot of heart, we can make a world of difference, one
game at a time.

Greenify Your Work From Home: A Sustainability Guide for Every Employee

As we learn to live with the ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic, more businesses have returned to the office, however many remain to work remotely. As we settle into the comfort of our home offices, it's imperative to remember that our environmental impact doesn't diminish. That's where the partnership between LocalFi and Greenlight Solutions comes in, as the team of students created a sustainability guide for employees to educate about living a sustainable work-from-home lifestyle.

Greenlight Solutions, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for the next generation of sustainability leaders, has joined forces with LocalFi, an SEO Digital Marketing agency with a strong emphasis on community and environmental responsibility. This collaboration embodies the core values shared by both entities - a commitment to purpose-driven action, solutions-oriented thinking, equitable empowerment, and a forward-thinking vision. The heart of Greenlight Solutions' mission is the belief that sustainability solutions should be achievable and accessible to everyone. By partnering with LocalFi, they're taking a significant step towards realizing this vision, reaching out to work-from-home (WFH) businesses and team members with practical and affordable sustainability solutions.

Empowering Employees, One Green Step at a Time

The WFH sustainability guide crafted by LocalFi and Greenlight Solutioneers is a comprehensive toolkit designed to greenify homes and integrate sustainability seamlessly into daily routines. Recognizing that many individuals are either unaware of sustainable practices or deterred by cost and inconvenience, the project offers a tailored approach.

From energy-efficient lighting to water-saving strategies and waste-reduction techniques, the guide covers all major sustainability pillars. We also chose to include a sustainable meal planning guide that encourages mindful consumption habits, while an environmental action app provides ongoing inspiration and support. All these deliverables had the primary objective of empowering team members to become advocates for sustainability, sparking change within their communities and beyond.

Simple Solutions, Significant Impact

The beauty of the sustainability guide lies in its simplicity. It acknowledges that implementing sustainable practices can be daunting but reassures readers that even small changes can make a monumental difference. Whether switching to LED bulbs, installing low-flow faucets, or composting kitchen waste, every action contributes to a greener, more sustainable future. In today's remote work landscape, sustainability starts at home.

Our guide provides education about the environmental and cost savings from switching to these sustainability alternatives, for example, simple changes like switching to LED bulbs and utilizing fans instead of air conditioning have long-lasting effects that can be seen on utility bills. Opting for air-drying over a dryer saves energy and prolongs the life of clothes while imparting a fresh scent. We emphasize investing in efficient space heating, smart thermostats, and solar ovens as they harness natural resources to cut energy usage and costs. We also felt it was conducive to instruct on computer energy-saving tips to implement into your daily habits while working at home as they conserve energy and the life of your electronics. Implementing computer energy-saving settings and scheduling regular energy audits can further reduce energy consumption. Additionally, we wanted to instruct about ways to minimize water consumption, especially in Arizona and other areas at risk of droughts, as they can create long-lasting impacts. Some alternatives included upgrading to water-efficient toilets and shower heads, vertical hydroponic systems that offer a space-saving way to grow fresh produce indoors while conserving water, pool covers, and lawn conversion plants and greenery. Finally, we wanted to spread more awareness about the importance of composting as a waste reduction strategy along with recycling and choosing reusable materials over disposables to help minimize waste and promote a circular economy. A big emphasis we implemented was e-waste recycling becoming a normal practice amongst the workforce as responsible disposal of electronics through recycling prevents hazardous materials from harming the environment. By educating employees about the benefits of sustainability and providing actionable tips, the guide empowers individuals to make a positive impact on their lives and communities.

In a world where every action counts, the Work From Home Sustainability Guide is a beacon of hope, showing that simple changes can lead to significant results in building a more sustainable future. Yet, the journey towards sustainability doesn't end with implementation. Monitoring and evaluation are crucial aspects of the process, ensuring that efforts translate into tangible results. As LocalFi and Greenlight Solutions pave the way for a greener future, their next steps involve expanding sustainability efforts, monitoring systems, and continuing to empower employees.

Taylor McMahon received her Bachelor’s in Environmental Science at UCLA and is going into her second year of her Master's in Sustainability Solutions at ASU. Jillian Meehan received her Bachelor’s in Sociology of Law, Crime, and Deviance from the University of Minnesota. She is now pursuing a Master of Sustainability Solutions at Arizona State University while she works for a nonprofit organization called Arizonans for a Clean Economy. Here, she works to educate the public about the economic and health benefits of a clean energy transition to build durable, bipartisan support for clean energy leadership in Arizona. Soon, she will travel to the Ecuadorian Amazon for a 6-week intensive language course to learn Kichwa – the most widely spread indigenous language in the Amazon basin. Jillian is interested in the intersection of renewable energy and community and indigenous-led sustainable development.

Taylor Fisher - Solutioneer
Taylor Fisher is entering her third year as an undergraduate student at ASU majoring in Computer Science. She is passionate about the intersections between technology, decision science, and equitable change, especially in the realm of sustainable agriculture. She is currently leading a team in the Engineering Projects In Community Service (EPICS) program at ASU and working with a researcher at the Conservation Innovation Lab, involving projects related to sustainable food systems.

Sunandani Guntur - Solutioneer
Sunandani Guntur graduated with a Master’s degree in Environmental and Resource Management program at ASU. She is currently working as an Assistant Environmental Scientist at WSP USA Inc., supporting remediation projects in Maricopa County, Arizona. Breaking Barriers: Inclusivity in Small to Medium-Sized Businesses Through Sustainability Reporting

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, sustainability isn't just a buzzword; it's a critical component for long-term success and societal impact. Large corporations have been at the forefront of sustainability initiatives for years, leveraging sophisticated tools and resources to track and report their environmental and social performance. However, there's a noticeable gap when it comes to small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) embracing sustainability reporting. Despite their significant collective impact, SMEs often lack the resources and infrastructure to effectively monitor and communicate their sustainability efforts. Greenlight Solutions, in collaboration with Infosol, aim to bridge that gap by developing a reporting dashboard that is tailored to SMES. The dashboard will enable companies to input data, set baselines, and test scenarios to reduce their ecological footprint.

Here is a sneak-peak into the current version of the Sustainability Reporting Dashboard. You will see the backend development of the dashboard, where the team implemented no-code app development, and what the dashboard will look like to the client

To prepare for the launch of the dashboard, the team also conducted market research and compiled a list of prospective clients. Using the SWOT analysis approach, 20 sustainability dashboards currently on the market were examined. Finding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats against other dashboards allowed the team to take advantage of weaknesses in the market and avoid potential vulnerabilites during the development stage. This research will also help guide future decisions regarding dashboard improvement, marketing, and launch. The team then identified 70 prospective clients, spanning 17 different industries and 12 cities in Arizona, to prepare for the dashboard launch. Using this document, GreenLight Solutions will have a diverse group of businesses to contact when the program is launched.

The Sustainability Reporting Dashboard is one of GreenLight Solutions contributions towards meeting Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The dashboard specifically contributes to achieving Target 12.6, by providing the resources necessary for SMEs to integrate sustainability metrics into their reporting cycle and adopt sustainable operating practices. Additionally, the dashboard will help all clients assess and align their operations to advance the progress towards meeting the following the Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Throughout this project, the Sustainability Reporting Dashboard Team gained valuable experience and insight into sustainable business practices. The team learned no-code app development, project management skills, and the importance of stakeholder engagement. Through market research and the dashboard development the Solutioneers gained an understanding of sustainability metrics and the realities that SMEs face regarding the barriers to sustainability compared to large corporations. The team was very lucky to have Sean Murray as Project Partner who shared his knowledge of the Lean Startup methodology and provided advice when challenges arose during the project.

During this journey, we've had the opportunity to collaborate within a global team as our Project Mentor, Rizwan Pasha, is located in India and our project lead, Sarah, is situated in Italy. Alongside our Project Partner Sean and our Project Mentor Rizwan, our Sustainability Reporting Dashboard team consists of three graduate students from Arizona State University and Harvard, each bringing their distinct expertise. Electrifying Our Communities with Buzze

Overview and Purpose
Buzze is revolutionizing the EV charging experience with its innovative neighborhood Electric Vehicle (EV) app, dedicated to enhancing accessibility and efficiency for communities nationwide. By connecting EV drivers with local hosts who own chargers, Buzze is transforming how people charge their electric vehicles, right in their own neighborhoods!

Driven by a mission to expand its user base, increase completed charges, and forge new EV partnerships, Buzze partnered with GreenLight Solutions to achieve their goals. With our Project Partners Nestor Carillo, the Head of Growth, and Aaron Lieberman, the CEO, we engaged in outreach events, drove social media initiatives, created blog posts, and explored collaborative opportunities to fuel Buzze's growth.

Strategy and Approach
We started with in-person outreach by conducting EV driver surveys and promoting app downloads at various Tesla Superchargers around Arizona. We pivoted to online outreach in alignment with Buzze’s rapid out-of-state expansion by sending direct messages to members of EV Facebook groups, creating Facebook Group posts, writing blogs and creating social media content, and identifying PR contacts Buzze for outreach in California.

Implementation of this project was exciting as we quickly became dynamic and flexible in order to best support our project partner. Working with a startup company allowed our team to gain insight into a fast-paced, changing work environment, and we learned how to adapt and pivot quickly when strategies changed.

Both in person and online outreach gave our team an opportunity to hone in on our strategic communication skills when conveying Buzze’s mission and services to raise awareness about how useful this app can be for the EV community.

Pivoting our outreach strategies and altering our action plan alongside Buzze taught us about the complexity of project management and the importance of proactive communication. Throughout the project, we had to prioritize communication to ensure everyone was on the same page and adapt to Buzze’s needs as they were trying new things and expanding their platform to new service territories.

Overall, this experience helped foster our professional development through exposure to real-world challenges, receiving constructive feedback and collaborating effectively on a sustainability project.

Our Collaborative Endeavors

At GreenLight Solutions, we embarked on a journey alongside GreenLoop, delving deep into the Arizona market to unearth opportunities for sustainable growth. Through meticulous market research, we identified 74 prospective customers and suppliers for GreenLoop's wood-plastic composite (WPC) products. Armed with these invaluable resources, we administered surveys to gauge the sustainability interests and values of these stakeholders, laying the groundwork for a robust business model.

Pooling our collective expertise, we crafted a comprehensive business development plan, seamlessly amalgamating market findings with GreenLoop's vision. Our collaborative efforts culminated in the creation of six compelling infographics, designed to highlight key sustainability initiatives crucial for GreenLoop's online presence.

GreenLoop's Vision: A Sustainable Odyssey

Born from a desire to combat the plastic pollution crisis, GreenLoop was founded in 2022 with a noble mission—to breathe new life into discarded materials and pave the way for a circular economy. As a Phoenix-based manufacturer and distributor of WPC building materials, GreenLoop stands at the forefront of sustainable innovation, transforming locally sourced plastic and wood waste into durable, eco-friendly products.

The Problem: A Call to Action

In a world plagued by plastic pollution and rampant resource depletion, GreenLoop stands as a beacon of hope, offering tangible solutions to mitigate environmental degradation. With plastic waste wreaking havoc on ecosystems and exacerbating climate change, the need for sustainable alternatives has never been more pressing. GreenLoop's innovative approach not only diverts waste from landfills but also addresses the pressing issue of plastic lumber imports, reducing carbon emissions and logistical costs.

GreenLoop's Solution and Impact

Harnessing the power of innovation and sustainability, GreenLoop specializes in high-quality WPC products crafted from recycled plastic and industrial sawdust. Rocking the Green Scene: GreenLight Solutions M3F Takeover

In the vibrant city of Phoenix, Arizona, music enthusiasts and sustainability advocates from all over converged at M3F. Formerly known as the McDowell Mountain Music Festival, this iconic, non-profit music festival is dedicated to directly supporting Arizona communities year-round. On Friday March 1st, and Saturday, March 2nd, they hosted various musical artists and 16,000 attendees each day.

While the festival buzzed with energy and excitement, a dedicated team was hard at work ensuring that the event left a positive impact on the environment. At the forefront of this effort was GreenLight Solutions' Green Team, committed to maximizing waste diversion through a range of innovative initiatives. From waste sorting to composting and venue beautification, the Green Team leaves no stone unturned in their quest towards sustainability. As the M3F unfolded over two dynamic days, the Green Team remained hard at work implementing tried and true sustainable strategies all throughout the venue. Team members stationed themselves at waste bins, educating attendees on proper waste disposal. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, waste sorting and composting efforts were underway, ensuring that recyclable and compostable materials found their way away from the landfill and towards the appropriate destination.

Throughout the festival grounds, attendees of all ages were inspired by the team's enthusiasm and dedication to sustainability. Amidst strobe lights and spirited festival-goers, educational signage decorated the lively landscape, guiding attendees on the path towards responsible waste management. Through this proactive outreach, the Green Team fostered a sense of environmental stewardship among attendees, empowering them to make eco-conscious decisions.

Behind the scenes, the numbers speak volumes about the Green Team's impact at M3F. With 16,000 festival-goers in attendance, the scale of the event was absolutely immense. Yet, thanks to the efforts of 140 volunteers and 10 staff members, they achieved more than a 55% waste diversion rate in just one weekend. This feat translates into the following tangible results: 1.6 tons of recyclable materials diverted from landfills, alongside 0.8 tons of compostable waste, and 6 tons of CO2 avoided. In the two days, volunteers contributed 700 hours of service, valued at $22,260. On top of these successes, the Green Team remains committed to continuous improvement, recognizing that every ton diverted represents a step forward in the journey towards sustainability.

As the curtains close on another successful M3F event, the Green Team reflects on their achievements with pride, serving as a testament to the power of collective action in the pursuit of sustainability.
