Arcosanti was founded by Paulo Soleri to “Reduce urban sprawl while promoting density.” As an urban laboratory for sustainable city planning, its infrastructure is rooted in arcology, where architecture and ecology live in harmony. Arcosanti is a cross-disciplinary sandbox for professionals across industries to explore innovative, alternative ways of work and play. Sustainability proves to be a critical element to the Arcosanti mission, “To seek an equitable and sustainable relationship between human activities and Earth’s ecology,” which initiated its collaboration with Greenlight Solutions Foundation ASU Student Chapter- putting the circular economy to the test.

Our project will enable Stardust Building Supplies to enhance its economic pillar of sustainability by saving money recycling old appliances. As a nonprofit that collects and repurposes technology, Stardust receives many different used building materials, household items, and appliances from across the state. Of these appliances, some are sold and given a second life, and some are not. Those that remain still have inventory costs. This is the challenge that was presented to the GreenLight project team.

Our team worked with Solar United Neighbors this semester. They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focusing on increasing public awareness regarding solar energy. Their three main goals are establishing solar co-ops, increasing civic engagement with solar energy policies and increasing community engagement with solar. Currently, they are trying to increase their reach by expanding into new states. After originally starting in Washington D.C., they have branched out to 11 additional states with Arizona being their latest. Being so, they’ve chosen to work with GreenLight Solutions to help get more hands on deck to run marketing campaigns and their informational sessions. The project team spent the semester learning about solar technology, policy regarding solar and how Solar United Neighbors runs their co-op process.

The past semester we had the opportunity to work directly with Ryan Johnson who is a board member on the Arizona Green Chamber of Commerce. The goal of this project was to create a comprehensive database that compiled sustainable businesses all over Arizona. The efforts behind creating this is to encourage businesses to increase their efforts on sustainability initiatives, as well as having this information available for consumers to make wiser decisions on their shopping patterns. This is something which has already been seen in many cities around Arizona. They have certified businesses and ranked their efforts based on a point system they created.
The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess came to GreenLight with the challenge of how to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from employee transportation. The resort had attempted to do this by signing up for the Maricopa County SharetheRide app, but employee participation was low. In hopes of popularizing the app, we took this challenge as an opportunity to find a creative means to understand the needs of employees. Therefore, we created a survey to gauge why or why not employees would participate in the program. The results from the survey could be used for future marketing and incentive programs to increase employee ridesharing.

Solar City is a national leader in residential, governmental, and institutional solar energy systems. The company recently merged with Tesla to serve their common vision of renewable energy for all. By provide cleaner and cheaper energy to buildings here in the Valley they are incrementally increasing our independence from volatile external sources of energy and increasing the ecological health of our region. When energy consultants attempt to communicate the benefits of rooftop solar they first have to catch people up to the latest technology and ownership plans on top of describing the increased resilience sustainability. Our team of Solutioneers were approached to help facilitate this conversation between energy consultants and homeowners. We envision an interactive multimedia web page that contains intelligible visuals populated with real time data that depicts the local impact of choosing solar here in the Valley. Our mission aligns with Tesla and Solar City, renewable energy for all.

The Electronic Music Alliance (EMA) is pleased to announce a holiday food drive at Ancient Future’s “Neverland” themed party for First Fridays in Phoenix on December 2nd at the Unexpected Gallery from 9pm-2am. GreenLight Solutions and The 2 Courtiers will partner to develop sustainable events. Our purpose for the project is to transform events into sustainability endeavors. Our mission is to pay mind to four areas of improvement: circular resources, renewable energy, reduced transportation carbon footprint, and engagement that fosters more sustainable culture/practices at events and beyond. The strategic objectives for this project are to network with the vendors and venue for channels of importing and exporting materials that execute cradle-to-cradle lifecycles; connect innovative renewable energy technology with sponsorship; promote benefits for alternative forms of transportation; and project ideas, movements, and innovations in sustainability initiatives for visitors. Our scale will be to start at The 2 Courtiers’ monthly events, and based upon success, scale and duplicate for larger and more distant events.
